I can't say for sure but it sounds to me like your SMTP issues are not related to Verizon. Many SMTP servers now require you to actually be using the associated ISP before allowing outbound messages or at least require some sort of password verification when sending outgoing messages through a foreign ISP. I've had to deal with this several times with both Time Warner and our local DSL provider.

I don't mind needing to use their SMTP server - what I mind is that I can't just automatically set that up. I have to register for it, and it takes several days. And they weren't able to do it for me over the phone. Seems like it should be pretty basic stuff. Are they worried about people outside the network hijacking the SMTP server?
